Early Life and Career
Jim Goad was born into a working-class family in the United States. Despite having parents who worked as a plumber and waitress, Goad later became known for his satirical and sociological examination of the American working class.
ANSWER Me! Magazine
In 1991, Goad co-founded the controversial self-published magazine ANSWER Me! with his wife, Debbie Goad. The magazine, which ran from 1991 to 1994, featured extreme content, including encyclopedias of murderers and suicides, essays on violence and hate, and graphic forensic photography. The content led to multiple legal challenges, including allegations that the magazine inspired three British students to commit suicide. However, no criminal charges were filed against Goad.
Literary Debut: The Redneck Manifesto
In 1997, Goad published his first book, "The Redneck Manifesto," with Simon & Schuster. The book delves into the lives of the American white working class, which Goad argues has been unfairly stereotyped by the wealthy as racist. He weaves together historical accounts, personal anecdotes, and social commentary to challenge the myth of white guilt and expose the existence of white slavery and black slave owners.
Prison Incarceration and Shit Magnet
In 1998, Goad was imprisoned for assaulting his girlfriend, Ann Ryan. After serving two years, he released "Shit Magnet" in 2002. The book examines the themes of guilt and the American prison system, based on Goad's experiences in confinement.
Later Works
Goad's other notable works include "Gigantic Book Of Sex," a collection of articles about Portland's sex industry, and "Politically Incorrect," a re-release of the first three issues of ANSWER Me! magazine.
Personal Life
Goad currently resides in Stone Mountain, Georgia, with his wife, Shannon, son, Zane, and his beloved female pug, Cookie.
