Biography of Jimmy Wang
Jimmy Wang is a professional Taiwanese tennis player. He was the highest-ranked Taiwanese player before the emergence of Lu Yen-Hsun. Currently, Wang is ranked 156th in the world, with his best ranking being 85th on March 3, 2006. Wang stands at a height of 178 cm and weighs 54 kg. He is right-handed and has a two-handed backhand.
Early Life and Career
Jimmy Wang was born on February 8, 1985, in Saudi Arabia. He began playing tennis at the age of seven and quickly established himself as one of the most talented Asian junior players. His nickname, Jimmy, was given to him at the age of nine by his coach, Alen Ma. Wang's father, who is now retired, assists him in training, while his mother works as a doctor. He also has an older sister.
As a junior player, Wang represented Taiwan, specifically the Republic of China, in the ITF Tournament Team, which was funded by the Grand Slam Development Fund. He competed in team competitions in three age groups: under 14, under 16, and under 18. In April 2001, he reached the final of the Australian Open and the US Open, as well as the semifinals at Wimbledon, becoming the 3rd-ranked junior player in the world. However, he finished the season ranked 5th in the world.
Professional Career
Wang turned professional at the age of 16 and steadily climbed the ATP world rankings through his performances in professional tournaments. In 2005, he broke into the ATP Top 100 for the first time after winning an ATP Challenger Tour event in Istanbul, Turkey.
At the age of 21, Wang reached the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, and faced Rafael Nadal in the first round of the China Open in Beijing, China. In 2004, he made his debut at a Grand Slam tournament, appearing at Wimbledon but losing in the first round to Andy Roddick. He reached the second round in 2006 and 2007. His most recent achievement was reaching the second round of the US Open in 2012.
Wang has won five tournaments in the ATP Challenger Tour and seven in the ITF Futures series. He is known for his trademark backward-facing white baseball cap.
As of now, Wang's prize money amounts to $688,759. He made his Davis Cup debut in 2001 and has a record of 17 wins and 6 losses. Wang continues to compete and represent Taiwan on the professional tennis circuit.
