Early Life and Career Beginnings

Gil started playing tennis at the age of five and began his professional career in 2003. He stands at 178 cm tall and weighs 70 kg. With a right-hand working technique and a two-handed backhand, Gil's talent quickly became evident. In 2002, he won a junior tournament in Bolivia and reached the finals of two junior tournaments in Portugal. The following year, he won two junior tournaments in Argentina and Portugal. By the end of 2003, Gil had established himself as one of the top junior players, ranking 10th in the ITF junior rankings.

Professional Career

In 2004, Gil started competing in the ITF Futures tournaments and quickly found success. He won his first Futures title in March 2004 in doubles, and within a year, he reached two more finals, climbing nearly a thousand places in the doubles rankings to break into the top 400. He also made his debut for the Portuguese Davis Cup team, contributing to their victory over Tunisia. However, he suffered three defeats in the matches against Serbia and Montenegro.

In the following year, Gil won three Futures titles in singles, reaching the top 300 by the end of the season. He also reached his first ATP Challenger doubles final in Bogota, Colombia, partnering with Marcelo Melo. As part of the Portuguese Davis Cup team, he helped secure victories over Estonia, Algeria, and Slovenia.

In June 2006, Gil achieved another milestone in his career by winning a Challenger tournament in Sassuolo, Italy, and breaking into the top 200 in singles rankings. Over the next year, he reached four Challenger doubles finals but couldn't secure a victory. In singles, he reached the final once in Seville, Spain, and emerged as the champion. He recorded several wins against top 100 players but hadn't entered the rankings himself.

In 2008, Gil won two Challenger titles in singles and doubles. He qualified for the main draw of the French Open but lost to Jeremy Chardy. He faced Chardy again in the first round of Wimbledon, where he played through qualifiers, but suffered a five-set defeat. Gil achieved his first top 100 ranking in August and played his third Grand Slam tournament of the year at the US Open, where he lost to Chardy once again. He ended the season on the brink of the top 100 in both singles and doubles.

In 2009, Gil reached the finals of two Challengers in singles and doubles. He emerged as the winner in doubles both times and won once in singles. His most notable success in ATP tournaments came in the Miami Masters, where he reached the third round, defeating players like Mischa Zverev and Ivo Karlovic. He eventually rose to a career-high ranking of 66, the highest ever achieved by a Portuguese player at that time.

In May 2010, Gil reached his first ATP singles final at the Estoril Open in Portugal. He defeated the top-ranked Portuguese player at the time, Rui Machado, and three other opponents from the top 100, including Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, to reach the final. In doubles, he reached the third round of the US Open, defeating Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra. Despite these successes, Gil couldn't break into the top 100 in singles or doubles by the end of the season.

In 2011, Gil returned to the top 100 in singles after reaching the second round of the Australian Open, marking his first Grand Slam victory. He continued to compete in ATP tournaments, aiming for further success in his career.
