Jiří Herold: Czech Violist and Composer

Early Life and Education

Jiří Herold was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied violin at the Prague Conservatory under Franz Lachner and Antonín Bennewitz. He also studied composition under Karel Knitl.

Career

Herold worked as a violist in Vienna and Kraków. In 1902, he founded his own string quartet. In 1906, he joined the Czech Quartet, replacing Oskar Nedbal and the briefly substituted Lionel Tertis. He remained with the quartet until his death.

From 1922, Herold was also a professor of chamber music at the Prague Conservatory.

Tragic Death and Legacy

Herold died in a broadcasting studio during a rehearsal of Berlioz's symphony "Harold in Italy." After his death, the Czech Quartet was disbanded.

Compositions

Herold's compositions primarily focus on works for the viola.
Heroldovo Quartet

In 1998, young Czech musicians formed the Herold Quartet (Heroldovo kvarteto) in honor of Herold.
