A Journey of Challenges and Resilience

36-year-old Jo-Anne Collins, the mother of twin boys born at 24 weeks, shares her incredible journey of premature birth, medical setbacks, and the eventual reunion of her sons. After 12 years of infertility and five rounds of IVF costing £25,000, Collins' dream of becoming a mother seemed within reach.

A Premature Arrival

However, fate had a different plan. At 24 weeks and two days into her pregnancy, Collins went into labor while stuck in traffic 110 miles from her home in Bristol. By a stroke of luck, she ended up just a mile from St. Peter's Hospital in Surrey, a renowned neonatal care center.

Twin Birth and Medical Emergencies

Despite the advanced medical facility, Nico, one of the twins, was born naturally while Frankie was delivered via cesarean due to his breech position. Both newborns weighed a mere 590 grams.

Soon after birth, Nico experienced a brain and lung hemorrhage and stopped breathing while in his mother's arms. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation revived him. Nico also underwent two rounds of neurosurgery for hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain.

Laser Eye Surgery and Chronic Lung Disease

Both Nico and Frankie underwent laser eye surgery. They also suffered from chronic lung disease, a common complication for premature babies. Frankie spent 17 weeks in the hospital, while Nico remained for 27 weeks.

A Family Reunited

Finally, after 187 days in the hospital, Nico was discharged, reuniting with his brother at home. Collins exclaimed, "Having both boys home is a miracle. The first time we were all together as a family, I cried with happiness." Frankie now weighs 4.88 kilograms, while Nico is at 4 kilograms.

The Importance of Support

Collins acknowledges the crucial role of her partner, Paul Paraskeva, a 37-year-old hairdresser, and the exceptional care provided by the National Health Service. She expresses, "I now feel like a real mum with both my boys home. We can finally function as a normal family."
