Early Life and Education
Joan Enric Vives Sicília, born in Barcelona, Spain, began his education at the Pedro Vila high school. He later attended the Jaume Balmes Institute, also in Barcelona. In 1965, he enrolled in the Theology Faculty of the Seminary of Barcelona, where he pursued degrees in Humanities, Philosophy, and Theology. In 1976, he obtained a Licentiate in Theology degree. In 1979, Vives Sicília earned a diploma in Catalan Philology from the University of Barcelona. In 1982, he completed a Licentiate in Philosophy degree from the University of Barcelona.
Career in the Church
Vives Sicília was ordained as a priest on September 24, 1974. He served as counselor and founding member of the Young Christian Movement from 1975 to 1987. From 1978 to 1989, he held positions as Secretary of the Council of Priests of the Archdiocese of Barcelona and Secretary and member of the Consultative Council of that body in 1985. Additionally, from 1978 to 1993, he was the Episcopal Delegate for Justice and Peace in Barcelona.
Academic Career
Vives Sicília held various teaching and administrative roles in higher education. He was a professor of History of Philosophy at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology of Catalonia from 1983 to 1993. From 1988 to 1993, he taught at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ramon Llull University and served as Dean of the Philosophy Faculty from 1989 to 1993. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Ramon Llull University from 1991 to 1994.
Ecclesiastical Career
In 1990, Vives Sicília began pursuing a doctorate at the University of Barcelona, which he completed in 1993. On June 9, 1993, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Barcelona and Titular Bishop of Nola. In 2001, he became Coadjutor Bishop of Urgell, succeeding Joan Martí Alanis as Bishop of Urgell and Prince of Andorra in 2003. Subsequently, in 2010, Vives Sicília was granted the personal title of Archbishop.
Head of State of Andorra
As Bishop of Urgell, Joan Enric Vives Sicília became one of the two co-princes of Andorra, alongside the President of France. He took the oath of office on July 10, 2003.
Honors and Recognitions
In recognition of his contributions, Vives Sicília has received numerous honors and awards, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ (Portugal, 2010) and the Honorary Medal of the City of Barcelona (1999).
