Blessed Roman Catholic Priest and Martyr
Blessed Roman Catholic priest, martyr, and church historian, Roman Archutowski penned over 200 articles for the Polish Catholic Encyclopedia. He was among the 108 Polish martyrs beatified by Pope John Paul II in Warsaw on June 13, 1999.
Early Life and Education
Born into an affluent landed gentry family, Archutowski graduated from high school in Pułtusk. In 1900, he entered the Saint John the Baptist Higher Theological Seminary in Warsaw. Ordained a priest in 1904, he was assigned to a parish in Jeżewo. He continued his theological studies at the Roman Catholic Theological Academy in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Academic and Pastoral Career
From 1910, Archutowski taught and held various positions in the ecclesiastical court. In 1940, he worked at the Warsaw Seminary. His significant works include "Essay on the History of the Catholic Church" (1915), which influenced the young Czesław Miłosz.
Arrest, Imprisonment, and Death
In 1942, Archutowski was arrested twice by the German occupying forces and imprisoned in Warsaw's Pawiak prison. On March 23, 1943, he was sent to the Majdanek concentration camp, where he contracted typhus. He died on April 18, 1943, on Palm Sunday. His body was incinerated in the crematorium.
Beatification and Legacy
Archutowski was beatified by Pope John Paul II along with other Polish martyrs of World War II on June 13, 1999. His feast day is June 12th.
