Biography of Joanna Moore
Joanna Moore, an American television and film actress, was born in 1934 as Dorothy Cook in Americus, Georgia, USA. She was the eldest of two daughters of scientist Henry Cook and his wife Dorothy English Cook. Unfortunately, the entire family was killed in a terrible car accident when Joanna was still very young. Her mother and younger sister died on the spot, while her father passed away from injuries a year later. Joanna remained with her grandmother as long as she could, but when the elderly woman became too frail, Joanna was adopted by a wealthy local family, which is when she changed her name to Joanna.
Early Career
Joanna had her first marriage experience as a teenager, but her first marriage with a young man named Willis Moore quickly ended, leaving her with only a new surname. She then pursued her education at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and later participated in a beauty pageant, which she won. This victory led her to Hollywood. Her career as a young actress began after a memorable party where she was noticed and invited to Universal Studios. Following several roles in TV series episodes, Joanna made her film debut in the crime drama "Appointment with a Shadow" in 1957. The following year, she appeared in more confident roles, including the melodrama "Flood Tide," Orson Welles' film noir "Touch of Evil," and Jack Arnold's sci-fi thriller "Monster on the Campus." In 1958 alone, she appeared in over 10 films.
Successful Career
By the 1960s, Joanna Moore's career was soaring as she actively worked in both film and television. She enjoyed her position as a beautiful actress and had a busy schedule. Some of her most popular works during the early 1960s included Edward Dmytryk's drama "Walk on the Wild Side," where she acted alongside Jane Fonda, and Gordon Douglas' musical comedy "Follow That Dream" with Elvis Presley. Joanna also appeared in numerous TV series, such as "Studio One," "Peyton Place," "Run for Your Life," "Police Story," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "77 Sunset Strip," and "Route 66," among many others. Throughout her career, she played more than 90 roles in films and TV shows. Her most notable role was as Peggy "Peg" McMillan in "The Andy Griffith Show."
Personal Life
Joanna Moore was married three times. Besides her first husband Willis Moore, not much is known about her second husband Jordan. She then married actor Don Oreck, but the couple divorced. In 1963, she married actor Ryan O'Neal, and they remained together until February 1967, during which they had two children. Both their daughter Tatum O'Neal and son Griffin O'Neal also became actors. It is known that Joanna struggled with substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, before and after her divorce from Ryan, but she continued to work. Her final film was "Run Chrissie Run!" in 1986. She married for the third time in 1975, to Gary L. Reeves, but the marriage lasted only a year. Joanna Moore passed away from lung cancer on November 22, 1997.
