Prime Minister (2004-2008)
Jóannes Eidesgaard was elected Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands on February 3, 2004, forming a coalition government consisting of the Social Democratic Party, Union Party, and People's Party.
Following the 2008 elections, he became the head of a separatist government that included the Republicans and Center Party in addition to the Social Democrats. However, the coalition collapsed in September, and the previous coalition of the Union Party, People's Party, and Social Democrats was reinstated. Eidesgaard subsequently stepped down as Prime Minister, and was replaced by Unionist leader Kaj Leo Johannesen.
Education and Early Career
Born on April 19, 1951, in Tvøroyri, Suðuroy, Eidesgaard initially worked as a high school teacher. He was elected to the Faroese Parliament in 1990 and held various ministerial positions in coalition governments from 1991 to 1996. He served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1996 to 1998.
Political Career
In 1996, Eidesgaard became the leader of the Faroese Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin). He held the position of Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1996 and again from September 26, 2008, onwards.
