Biography of Joe Johnston
Joe Johnston, an American film director responsible for movies such as "Hidalgo", "Jurassic Park III", "October Sky", "Jumanji", and many others, was born on May 13, 1950, in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. He received his education at California State University, Long Beach, and Art Center College of Design.
Early Career
Joe Johnston responded to an advertisement seeking a storyboard artist from his college, which turned out to be for George Lucas' company, Lucasfilm. He started working at Lucasfilm and eventually became the head of the studio's screenplay department. Johnston frequently collaborated with Lucas' team in the editing room, considering it the best film school he had ever attended, witnessing Lucas editing the famous "Star Wars" trilogy.
Lucasfilm and Beyond
However, Johnston decided to leave Lucasfilm to travel the world, but Lucas had different plans for him. When Johnston returned, Lucas advised him to change his career path and offered to pay for his film school education at the University of Southern California, while also allowing him to work with him for half the salary. Johnston did not hesitate and accepted Lucas' offer in 1984.
Directorial Career
In addition to the aforementioned films, Joe Johnston directed the popular sci-fi comedy "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" (his debut and an immediate hit), the sci-fi action film "The Rocketeer", and the animated film "The Pagemaster" featuring Macaulay Culkin. He was also one of the directors of the TV series "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" and the film "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: The Spring Break Adventure". Currently, his upcoming movie "The Wolfman", a remake of the 1941 film about a man bitten by a werewolf returning to his homeland, is preparing for release. Additionally, his directorial work "Captain America" is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2011. Johnston had been in talks with Marvel about "Captain America" for two years prior. The film's producer, Kevin Feige, explained the choice of Johnston, stating, "After all, he designed all those spaceships for 'Star Wars' and did the storyboards for the first 'Indiana Jones'." The story of "Captain America" takes place during World War II, and the character eventually becomes part of the modern-day Avengers team.
