Early Life and Education

Joel Edgerton was born in 1974 near Blacktown, Australia. His father, Mitchell or Michael (sources vary), was a successful lawyer who provided for the family. His mother, Marianne, was a homemaker who raised Joel and his older brother, Nash.

Acting Career

Edgerton made his film debut in 1995's "The Serpent's Lair" as Buzz. He went on to appear in films such as "Water Rats," "Fallen Angels," "The Big Sky," "The Dish," and "Chasing the Sun."

In 2003's "Ned Kelly," he starred as Aaron Sherritt alongside Heath Ledger and Naomi Watts. He gained international recognition for his role as Owen Lars in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy ("Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith").

Edgerton's versatility became evident in films like "Smokin' Aces" (as Hugo) and "King Arthur" (as Arthur's nephew). He also played a vampire in "The Thing" and a soldier in "Warrior."

In Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," Edgerton's portrayal of Tom Buchanan earned him critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. He later starred as Ramses II in Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings."
