Rajesh Khanna: The First Superstar of Bollywood

Born on December 29, 1942, in Burwala (now in Pakistan), Rajesh Khanna was the adopted son of Chunnilal Khanna and Lilavati. He attended St. Sebastian's Goan High School in Mumbai, where he became close friends with Ravi Kapoor (later known as Jeetendra).

Kisinchand Chellaram College and the All India Talent Hunt

Khanna attended Kishinchand Chellaram College with Jeetendra. In 1965, he entered and won the All India Talent Contest, which gave him the opportunity to act in films.

Break into Bollywood and National Fame

His debut film was "Aakhri Khat" in 1966, followed by "Raaz" in 1967. Khanna's career skyrocketed with the release of "Aradhana" in 1969, which established him as a "superstar." In 1971, "Haathi Mere Saathi" became the highest-grossing film of the year.

The Golden Age of Rajesh Khanna

Khanna's popularity soared in the early 1970s, with 15 consecutive hits from 1969 to 1972. He became known as "Kaka" and received immense adulation from fans. A BBC documentary was made on his life in 1973.

Khanna served as a Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1996. He returned to acting in 1999, predominantly playing fatherly roles.

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1973, Khanna married 16-year-old actress Dimple Kapadia, with whom he had two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke. They separated in 1984 but remained amicable until Khanna's death.

Final Years and Passing

In April 2012, Khanna's health began to deteriorate. He passed away on July 18, 2012, the day after being discharged from the hospital. He left behind an enduring legacy as one of the most iconic actors in the history of Indian cinema.
