Early Life and Education
Joel McHale was born in Rome, Italy, to American father Jack and Canadian mother Laurie. The McHale family returned to Seattle after Jack's work assignment in Italy. Joel attended the University of Washington, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1995. An avid athlete, McHale participated in rowing and football during his undergraduate years. He later pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree in professional acting at the University of Washington.
Stand-Up Comedy and Improvisation
McHale's foray into stand-up comedy began with "Almost Live!", a local comedy show on Seattle's KING-TV. From 1993 to 1997, he honed his comedic skills as a member of the improvisational group Unexpected Productions.
Acting Career
After graduating with his master's degree, McHale relocated to Los Angeles. He initially landed small roles in television shows such as "Oliver Beene", "CSI: Miami", and "Will & Grace". His film debut came in the 2004 biopic "Lords of Dogtown", where he portrayed a reporter.
The Soup and Television Success
In 2004, McHale became the host of E!'s weekly satirical news program "The Soup". The show featured McHale's humorous commentary on the week's most bizarre and outrageous television moments. McHale also served as a co-host on "Loveline" and was involved with the theater company Circle X.
Radio and Podcast Appearances
McHale made regular appearances on "The Adam Carolla Show" and "Mickey and Amelia". He also occasionally guested on "The Opie and Anthony Show".
Voice Acting and Television Guest Roles
Beyond his on-screen performances, McHale has lent his voice to video games. He has also made guest appearances as a judge on "Iron Chef America" and in the American adaptation of the British sitcom "The IT Crowd".
