Before performing himself, Joel was involved in editing a fanzine for the independent music group 'Glamour Guide for Trash' and worked at CFRE-FM radio in Ontario. During this time, Joel began writing his own songs and in 2001, he released them on his own music label, 'EvilEvil', under the project name 'The Hidden Cameras'. Their first album, titled 'Ecce Homo', was a result of this effort.

Afterwards, Gibb recruited musicians and formed a new collective, which began performing in churches, parks, exhibitions, theaters, and anywhere they were given a platform to hold concerts. The performances of The Hidden Cameras, which consisted of over ten members, were always spectacular and visually captivating. Joel meticulously planned each concert, creating a theatrical show with the musicians, dancers, and even strippers. The band quickly gained a growing number of fans and firmly established themselves in the Canadian music scene.
