Joel Stern is an American entrepreneur, chairman, and CEO of Stern Stewart & Co. He is also the creator and popularizer of the concept of Economic Value Added (EVA). Stern is considered one of the world's leading authorities in finance, corporate performance evaluation, trade balance, and incentive compensation. He is also one of the founders of the concept of shareholder value.

Education and Early Career

Joel Stern graduated from the University of Chicago, where he studied finance and economics. After completing his education, Stern joined Chase Manhattan Bank, where he eventually led the global consulting project "Chase Financial Policy". It was during this time that Stern developed the idea of Economic Value Added.

Founding Stern Stewart & Co

In 1982, after 18 years of working at the bank, Stern decided to start his own company, Stern Stewart & Co. Unfortunately, the bank's management did not see the value in his ideas. Stern's company focuses on providing consulting services in the field of finance and corporate performance evaluation.

Contributions to Finance and Publications

Joel Stern has written two books independently and has been involved in the creation of six others. All of his books are dedicated to various aspects of financial economics. He currently serves as the executive editor of the "Journal of Applied Corporate Finance" and is a member of the editorial board of the "Journal of Financial Management and Analysis".

Academic Career

Throughout his academic career, Stern has worked at several faculties of business operations and business schools around the world. He currently serves on the Executive Advisory Committee of the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester and is a member of the Council on the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago.

Stern actively shares the results of his research with the public and has extensive connections with the press. He writes financial columns for publications such as the "London Sunday Times" and "The Financial Times".
