Biography of Joel Sartore

Joel Sartore, an American photographer, is best known for his photographs of nature, particularly portraits of animals. Born in 1962 in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Sartore developed a passion for photography during his childhood in Ralston, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in journalism.

Starting his career as a journalist and photographer for a local newspaper, Sartore also submitted his best works to National Geographic, hoping to one day become one of their contributors. His dream came true in the early 1990s as he began working for National Geographic on a regular basis.

Sartore's photographs have also been featured in other publications such as Audubon Magazine, Geo, Time, Life, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, as well as nature books. Looking at Sartore's images, it is sometimes hard to believe that the animals in these photographs were captured in their natural habitats because of their impeccable and "balanced" composition.

Interestingly, Sartore has a few trade secrets of his own. He always shoots with maximum lighting and pays great attention to composition. He also gives titles to his photographs before even completing the shooting process.

Today, Sartore is most recognized for his animal portraits. Wolves, foxes, parrots, elephants, frogs, and numerous bird species have become the "clients" of photographer Joel Sartore. Among his published books are "The Company We Keep: America's Endangered Species," "Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky," "Photographing Your Family," "Rare: Portraits of America's Endangered Species," and his latest work, "Let's Be Reasonable," published in 2011.

In 2012, Sartore became a member of the National Geographic Society. He is a regular participant on the Sunday Morning Show on CBS with Charles Osgood. Sartore, along with his wife and their three children, resides in Lincoln, Nebraska, although his work often takes him to the far corners of the globe.
