Biography of Joel Silver

Joel Silver, a producer of adventure films and action movies from the 1980s and 90s, was born on July 14, 1952, in South Orange, New Jersey, USA. During his time at New York University, Silver worked as a producer and actor in student films. His first job as an assistant producer came when he joined Lawrence Gordon's production team.

Early Career

Silver's first project as an assistant producer was the 1979 film "The Warriors." Shortly after, he was appointed as the president of Lawrence Gordon Pictures. Together with Gordon, Silver produced successful films such as "48 Hrs." (1982), "Weird Science" (1985), "Xanadu" (1980), "Jekyll and Hyde...Together Again" (1982), and the remake of "Brewster's Millions" (1985). By 1985, Silver had gained enough experience to establish his own production company, called Silver Pictures.

Establishing Silver Pictures

In the same year, Silver Pictures released the film "Commando," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was a box office success. This marked the beginning of Silver's focus on producing action films. The subsequent films released by Silver Pictures included "Lethal Weapon" (1987, 1989, and 1992), the first two installments of "Die Hard" (1988 and 1990), "Predator" (1987), and "Predator-2" (1990). While most of the films produced by Silver were highly successful, there were a few exceptions such as "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" (1990) and "Hudson Hawk" (1991).

Transition to Television

After establishing himself as a producer of thrilling action films, Silver decided to expand his work into television. He collaborated with Richard Donner, David Giler, Walter Hill, and Robert Zemeckis to create the anthology series "Tales From the Crypt." In the episode titled "Split Personality" (1992), Silver made his directorial debut. He also worked on various television projects, including "Parker Kane" (1990, NBC), "Two-Fisted Tales" (1992, Fox), and "The First 100 Years: A Celebration of American Movies" (1995, HBO).
