Early Life and Career
Gunnar Gren, a Swedish football legend, began his career as a right winger, attacking midfielder, and withdrawn forward. As part of the renowned "Gre-No-Li" trio (alongside Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm), he formed the attacking force of AC Milan from 1949 to 1953 and the Swedish national team in the late 1940s.
International Debut and Olympic Glory
Gren made his international debut for Sweden on August 29, 1940, against Finland. He rose to prominence at the 1948 London Olympics, where he scored three goals in four games, including a brace in the final against Yugoslavia. Sweden emerged victorious, with Nordahl topping the tournament's scoring charts.
Suspension and Return to the National Team
From 1949 to 1957, Gren did not feature for Sweden due to a ban on foreign players representing the national team ahead of the 1958 World Cup. However, after joining Örgryte IS, he returned to international duty in 1957. At age 37, he participated in the 1958 World Cup, playing in five matches and scoring one goal in the semifinal against West Germany.
Legacy as a Footballer
Gren's remarkable career with the Swedish national team spanned 57 appearances and 32 goals, making him the fourth-highest goalscorer in its history. His achievements include a gold medal at the 1948 Olympics and a third-place finish at the 1950 World Cup.
Coaching Career
Post-retirement, Gren pursued a coaching career. He joined the staff of Juventus in 1961 before assuming managerial roles at GAIS (1963-1964) and Uddevalla (1976).
