Johannes Jensen: A Mathematical Pioneer
Early Years and EducationJohannes Jensen was born in Nakskov, Denmark, but spent much of his childhood in northern Sweden, where his father worked. These years, Jensen later recalled, were "the most beautiful of my life." His family eventually returned to Denmark, and in 1876, Jensen enrolled at the Technological College in Copenhagen.
Despite studying mathematics at the college and publishing his first mathematical paper while there, Jensen was largely self-taught and never held an academic position.
Career at the Copenhagen Telephone Company
Between 1881 and 1924, Jensen worked at the Copenhagen Telephone Company, rising to the position of head of the technical department in 1890. He pursued mathematics in his spare time.
Contributions to Mathematics
Jensen made significant contributions to mathematics, including:- Jensen's Inequality:An inequality in mathematics that is widely used in a variety of fields.
