Biography of Sophie Germain

Sophie Germain was a French mathematician, philosopher, and mechanic who made significant contributions to differential geometry, number theory, and mechanics. She was born in Paris, France and had a passion for mathematics from a young age. Despite facing opposition from her parents, who believed it was not suitable for a woman, Sophie independently studied mathematical works in her father's library, particularly the famous history of mathematician Montucla.

Correspondence with Prominent Mathematicians

Sophie Germain engaged in correspondence with renowned mathematicians such as D'Alembert, Lagrange, Fourier, and others. To overcome the societal barriers faced by women in academia, she often used the pseudonym "Monsieur Le Blanc," which was the real identity of one of Lagrange's students. With the support and guidance of Lagrange and Legendre, Sophie was able to meet them personally and receive encouragement for her studies.

Collaboration with Gauss

In 1804, deeply impressed by Gauss' book "Disquisitiones Arithmeticae," Sophie began corresponding with him under her usual pseudonym. They discussed various topics related to number theory. In 1806, during the Prussian campaign, the Napoleonic army occupied Göttingen. Worried about Gauss, Sophie wrote a heartfelt letter to her acquaintance, General Joseph-Marie Pernety, urging him to ensure that Gauss did not suffer the same fate as Archimedes. The general informed Gauss that he had a patroness, and soon Sophie's secret was revealed.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1808, Sophie Germain wrote "Mémoire sur les vibrations des lames élastiques," for which she received a prize from the French Academy of Sciences. She continued her studies in number theory and other areas. In 1811, she participated in a competition organized by the Paris Academy of Sciences on the topic of elastic vibration theory and the origin of Chladni figures. After five years of research and the consultative assistance of Lagrange, Sophie finally won the "First Class Prize" of the competition in 1816.

Sophie became the first woman to have the right to attend meetings of the Paris Academy of Sciences. She continued her work on elasticity theory. In 1830, based on Gauss's recommendation, the University of Göttingen awarded Sophie an honorary doctorate, but she passed away before receiving it.

Legacy

Sophie Germain's contributions to mathematics led to the naming of several formulas after her. She also proved the "First Case" of Fermat's Last Theorem for Sophie Germain primes, which are prime numbers where 2n + 1 is also prime. Her philosophical essay, titled "General Thoughts on the State of Sciences and Literature at Different Periods of Their Culture," was published posthumously.

In honor of Sophie Germain, a crater on Venus, a street in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, and a high school in the 4th arrondissement of Paris have been named after her. Sophie never married and did not hold any paid positions but lived off the financial support provided by her father.
