Biography of Johan Pettersson
Johan Pettersson, one of the tallest individuals in human history, was born on February 9, 1913, in Delvik, Ireland. He was the third child in his family and the only one with extraordinary physical characteristics. By the age of 20, he had already reached a towering height of 2 meters and 64 centimeters.
Despite his remarkable stature, Johan was a warm and open-hearted person. He quickly formed friendships with his peers and often carried them on his shoulders, symbolizing his bright future. However, his size prevented him from fitting into the tiny shops that operated in Delvik, making him unable to work.
In 1934, Johan moved to Denmark, where he discovered that he could earn a living simply by showcasing himself to the public. Alongside three other individuals, he formed an art group and embarked on a journey to tour the world in search of fame and fortune.
Their enterprise was immensely successful throughout Europe. They performed in music halls, overshadowing their counterparts with their unique act. While three smaller individuals played miniature accordions below, Johan stood above them, playing a massive musical instrument. This continued until the outbreak of World War II, during which Johan worked in shipyards in Copenhagen.
Unlike other famous giants, Johan was not frail or weak. He possessed enviable health and incredible strength, which made his work on the shipyards relatively easy, as he did not face the usual constraints of confined spaces. Towards the end of the war, Johan resumed his tours and caught the attention of John Ringling, one of the famous Ringling brothers. He was offered a contract to perform in the United States, which he gladly accepted.
In the US, Johan performed in a top hat and with comical tails, earning a weekly salary of $200. He also sold giant rings that perfectly fit his finger but could easily pass through an average person's silver dollar. However, his time with the Ringling brothers was short-lived, and he continued his career under the management of Glen Porter in an intermission act. It was under Porter's guidance that Johan became not only the tallest person on Earth but also a living brand.
Porter, aware of Johan's Irish and Scandinavian roots, designed a Viking costume for him. From then on, Johan was hailed as the Viking Giant, and his popularity soared. Eventually, he reached a level where he no longer needed management and established a business under his own name. His show, "Single-O," where he performed as the sole actor, gained immense popularity. In five years, he earned approximately $50,000, a significant amount for that time.
During this period, Johan decided to venture into the film industry. In 1950, he made his debut in the movie "Prehistoric Women," followed by "Carny" thirty years later. In 1981, he appeared in the documentary "Being Different."
At the age of 69, an incredible feat for a giant, Johan retired to Florida. However, his health had deteriorated, prompting him to move back to his homeland, Delvik, to live with his brother. It was there that Johan passed away on November 26, 1984.
A museum dedicated to his name stands near his grave and continues to attract hundreds of curious tourists.
