The Early Life of Johann Albrecht Korff

Johann Albrecht Korff was born on November 30, 1697, in the Duchy of Courland. He came from an impoverished but ancient noble family. Despite his family's aspirations, Korff initially showed little interest in education and was enrolled in the Prussian army. However, a sudden spark of energy and thirst for knowledge led him to leave the army and pursue studies at the University of Jena.

Korff's Rise Through the Ranks

After graduating with distinction from university, Korff was appointed chamberlain to Anna Ioannovna, Duchess of Courland. In 1728, he was sent to Moscow to petition for an increase in the Duchess's pension from the Russian court. In 1730, he accompanied Anna Ioannovna to Moscow upon her becoming Empress of Russia.

Korff's Involvement in the Russian Court

As Empress, Anna Ioannovna appointed Korff as chamberlain to the Russian court. He was later sent to Courland to advocate for the inclusion of the Biron family in the Courland nobility. In 1731, Korff became an actual chamberlain and was again sent to Courland to prepare for the election of Biron as Duke of Courland.

Korff's Presidency of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences

In 1734, Korff was appointed "Chief Commander of the Academy" of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Despite his limited scientific background, Korff was a passionate bibliophile and took an active interest in the Academy's affairs.
