Early Life and CareerJohann Kruger was a prominent German composer and musicologist born in 1598. His musical contributions, particularly his compositions for Lutheran worship, left an enduring legacy in the realm of music.
Appointment as Cantor
In 1622, Kruger was appointed as the cantor of the St. Nicholas Church in Berlin. This position provided him with an influential platform to showcase his musical talents and shape the city's religious music.
Hymn Collections
Kruger published three significant hymn collections, each featuring his renowned melody "Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen?" This melody later became the basis for Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" and "St. John Passion." The first collection, "Berliner Gesangbuch," was published in 1640. His second, "Kirchenmelodien," followed in 1649, featuring a four-part vocal arrangement of "Herzliebster Jesu" accompanied by instruments.
Praxis Pietatis Melica
Kruger's most popular compilation, "Praxis pietatis melica," was likely published around 1635. By 1733, it had reached its 43rd edition. This collection became a widely used resource for Lutheran congregations and featured many of Kruger's original melodies.
Enduring Legacy
At the dawn of the 20th century, approximately 20 of Kruger's melodies remained in circulation, with "Nun danket alle Gott" being particularly popular. His compositions continue to be sung and appreciated by music lovers to this day, solidifying his place as a distinguished figure in the history of Lutheran music.
