Biography of Johann F. Graf

Early Life and Career

Johann F. Graf is an Austrian businessman and billionaire. He was born in the Döbling district of Vienna, Austria, to a modest family. He was raised by his grandparents as his parents were not well-off. In his youth, Graf studied to become a butcher and excelled in his studies, becoming a master at the young age of 23. However, he did not wish to continue his career in the meat industry, and his family tavern did not hold much appeal for him.

In 1974, Graf co-founded the company "Brodnik & Graf GmbH" with Gerhard Brodnik. The company supplied Belgian pinball machines to pubs, cafes, and other public establishments, and it enjoyed some success. In 1980, Graf decided to venture into producing his own gaming machines.

Success with Novomatic

Gradually, but steadily, Graf's business began to thrive. By 1982, it was clear that Johann had achieved impressive results. The network he had established accounted for around 70% of the market. By the 1990s, his company, Novomatic, was operating in over 30 countries and employed over 18,000 people. In 2011 alone, Novomatic's turnover reached $4.3 billion.

Currently, Graf owns 100% of the shares of Novomatic AG, the largest subsidiary of the company. His son, Thomas, oversees technological matters and is also a member of the board of directors.

Other Ventures and Personal Life

In June 2012, Johann Graf acquired 9% of the shares of the Austrian private bank, Alizee, which was experiencing difficult times at the time.

Outside of his business endeavors, Graf is known as an automobile collector. His collection includes approximately 120 vintage Jaguar models. He currently resides in Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria, and leads a very private lifestyle, avoiding unnecessary attention. Graf is divorced and has three children.

Recognition and Legacy

Johann F. Graf is considered one of Austria's most prominent self-made billionaires, particularly among entrepreneurs in the post-war period. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his achievements in the business world.
