Johannes Rydberg: Swiss Mathematician and Physicist
Early Life and EducationJohannes Rydberg was born into a judge's family in Switzerland. He pursued his studies at the Universities of Karlsruhe and Berlin, culminating in his 1849 doctoral dissertation on the cycloid at the University of Basel.
Career and Academic Pursuits
Rydberg spent the remainder of his life in Basel. He taught at a girls' school while also delivering lectures at the University of Basel. In 1868, he married and had six children.
Rydberg primarily focused on geometry in his scientific endeavors. However, his most significant contribution came in 1885 when he discovered the hydrogen spectral series, which bears his name.
Legacy
In recognition of Rydberg's profound impact on science, a lunar crater was named after him. His discovery of the hydrogen spectral series continues to be a cornerstone of our understanding of atomic spectroscopy.
