Early Life and EducationBorn on June 1, 1950, Johan Peter Rupert is the eldest son of South African business magnate Anton Rupert and his wife, Huberte Rupert. Growing up in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Rupert pursued studies in Economics and Law at the University of Stellenbosch, graduating with an honorary doctorate in 2004.
Business Career
After completing his education in the United States, Rupert returned to South Africa and founded Rand Merchant Bank in 1979. He also established the Small Business Development Corporation, creating approximately 500,000 jobs in the country.
In 1984, Rupert merged Rand Merchant Bank with RMB and relocated to join his father's company, Rembrandt Group. In 1988, he established Compagnie Financiere Richemont and was elected to the Board of Directors of Rothmans International plc, earning the "Businessman of the Year" award from The Sunday Times.
