Early Life and CareerHermann Joseph Kottowitz was a German chess composer and renowned theorist. Along with Karl Kockelkorn (1843-1914), he established the logical school in chess composition. He employed the pseudonyms J. Kuck and Alfred Wiedemann in his publications. Kottowitz worked as a chief engineer in locomotive factories in Elbing and Königsberg. Upon retirement, he resided in Dresden.
Logical School of Chess Composition
In their seminal work, "Das Indische Problem" (1903), Kottowitz and Kockelkorn highlighted novel compositional ideas, emphasizing critical moves by black pieces, their reconstruction and maneuvers, and the art of deflection and attraction. They stressed the significance of clarity in solutions and simplicity in design. The book significantly influenced the emergence of the popular "Neo-German" or logical school in chess composition.
