John Boehner: A Political Journey

Early Life and Military Service

John Andrew Boehner was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 17, 1949. He attended Moeller High School and served in the U.S. Navy for two months during the Vietnam War.

Education and Business Career

After his discharge from the Navy, Boehner graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1977. He joined Nucite Sales, a packaging and plastics company, and eventually became its president.

Entry into Politics

In 1981, Boehner was elected to the Union Township Board of Trustees in Ohio. He then served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1985 to 1990.

U.S. Representative

In 1990, Boehner was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 8th Congressional District. He was a member of the "Gang of Seven" reformers who advocated for changes in Congress.

Party Leadership

In 1995, Boehner became Chairman of the House Republican Conference. He lost this position in 1998 due to Republican defeats in the midterm elections. In 2001, he was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Speaker of the House

In 2006, Boehner was elected Majority Leader of the House of Representatives after Tom DeLay resigned amidst scandal. He led the Republican Party through the 2006 midterm elections, which resulted in a Democratic takeover of Congress.

Minority Leader

After the Democrats regained control of the House, Boehner became Minority Leader in 2007. He held this position until his retirement in 2015.

Personal Life

Boehner is married and has two daughters.
