Archbishop John Bukovsky's Life and Legacy
Early Life and Diplomatic ServiceArchbishop John Bukovsky was ordained into the Society of the Divine Word (Verbites) in 1943. Due to persecution against Catholics, he was forced to leave Slovakia and relocate to the United States. In 1950, he was ordained a priest in Techny, Illinois.
Diplomatic Career
Bukovsky spent many years in diplomatic service for the Holy See. In 1990, he was ordained as Bishop of the titular See of Tabalta and appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Romania.
Representative to the Russian Federation
On December 24, 1994, Bukovsky was appointed Representative of the Holy See to the Russian Federation. He served in this role until his retirement on January 29, 2000, as Nuncio Emeritus.
Legacy
Archbishop Bukovsky played a significant role in the revival of the Church in Eastern Europe and Russia. He was instrumental in developing diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Russian Federation.
Death and Burial
Archbishop John Bukovsky passed away on December 18, 2010, in Techny, Illinois. His funeral Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Paolo Pezzi in the Moscow Cathedral on December 21, 2010.
