Early Years and Curia Career

Diarmuid Martin was born in Dublin, Ireland, and ordained a priest in 1978. In 1994, he was appointed Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, a role he held until January 17, 2001.

Episcopal Appointments

On December 5, 1998, Martin was ordained as Titular Bishop of Glendalough, a position he held until January 17, 2001. On January 17, 2001, he became Titular Archbishop of Glendalough.

Geneva and Dublin

From January 17, 2001, to May 3, 2003, Martin served as Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations Office and Specialized Agencies in Geneva. On May 3, 2003, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Dublin.

Archbishop of Dublin

On April 26, 2004, Martin was appointed Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland. He held this position until December 29, 2020.
