Childhood and Education
John Charles Fields was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, in 1863. His father owned a leather goods store. In 1880, Fields graduated from Hamilton Collegiate Institute. By 1884, he had earned a degree in mathematics from the University of Toronto.
Academic Career
Fields pursued his studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He received his doctorate there and published his thesis, "Symbolic Finite Solutions and Solutions by Definite Integrals of the Equation dny/dxn = xmy." The "American Journal of Mathematics" published this work and later featured Fields' articles and essays.
Fields began teaching at Johns Hopkins and later worked at universities in America and Europe. In 1891, he lived and worked in Berlin, Göttingen, and Paris. There, he met renowned mathematicians such as Karl Weierstrass, Felix Klein, Ferdinand Georg Frobenius, and Max Planck.
Math as a Discipline
Algebraic functions became Fields' focus. He published extensively on the subject throughout his career. Upon returning to Canada in 1902, Fields lectured at the University of Toronto. He dedicated himself to promoting mathematics and establishing its importance in the Canadian scientific community. He secured grants for mathematicians and helped establish the National Research Council of Canada and the Ontario Research Foundation.
From 1919-1925, Fields served as President of the Royal Canadian Institute. In 1924, he organized the International Congress of Mathematicians, a significant event for the global mathematics community.
The Fields Medal
Fields' most notable contribution was the establishment of the Fields Medal, known as the "Nobel Prize for Mathematics." The idea for the award originated in the late 1920s, but the first ceremony occurred in 1936, after Fields' passing. The Fields Medal was created as an alternative to the Nobel Prize, as mathematics was not included in the original Nobel categories.
Legacy
Fields passed away in Toronto on August 9, 1932, at the age of 69. He was posthumously honored by having the highest mathematical award named after him. Fields' other accolades include memberships in the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of London. The Fields Institute at the University of Toronto is also named after him.
