Early Life and Football Beginnings

John Collins was born on January 31, 1968, in Galashiels, Scotland. As a child, he excelled in both football and rugby, but ultimately chose to pursue a career in the former. From 1980 to 1984, Collins played for local club Hutchison Vale, captaining the team in his debut year.

Professional Career

Hibernian

In 1984, Collins signed his first professional contract with Hibernian FC. He spent six years with the Edinburgh club, making 195 appearances and scoring 21 goals. In 1988, he was voted Young Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.

Celtic

In 1990, Collins joined Celtic for a transfer fee of £1 million, becoming the club's first player to command a seven-figure sum. He played 229 games for Celtic, scoring 48 goals. His only major trophy with the Hoops was the Scottish Cup in 1995.

Monaco

In 1996, Collins moved to AS Monaco on a free transfer. UEFA ruled that the Bosman ruling did not apply in this case, as Monaco is not part of the European Union. With Monaco, he won the French championship in 1997 and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League the following season.

Everton and Fulham

Collins returned to England in 1998, joining Everton. Two years later, he was transferred to Fulham for £2 million, where he retired as a player in 2003.

International Career

Collins made his debut for the Scotland national team in 1988. He was part of the squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup but did not play. He played in the 1996 UEFA European Championship and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, scoring a penalty in the opening match against Brazil. He retired from international football in 1999 after Scotland failed to qualify for UEFA Euro 2000. Collins made a total of 58 appearances and scored 12 goals for Scotland.

Coaching Career

Collins began his coaching career with Hibernian in 2006, winning the Scottish League Cup in his first season. However, he left the club in 2007. He then briefly managed Belgian club Charleroi in 2008.
