Early Life and Inspiration

John Henry Knight was born on January 21, 1847, to a banker and brewer in Farnham, Surrey, England. Inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851, he developed a passion for engineering, particularly steam-powered road transport.

Building the First British Gasoline-Powered Motor Vehicle

In 1895, Knight, with assistance from George Parfitt, constructed the first British gasoline-powered motor vehicle. It was a three-wheeled, two-seater contraption dubbed "Trusty," capable of reaching speeds of 8 miles per hour.

The "Trusty" and its Legal Troubles

In an attempt to raise awareness of the restrictions on self-propelled vehicles in Britain, Knight drove "Trusty" on public roads. On October 17, 1895, his assistant, James Pallingur, was arrested for driving without a license.

Knight was also charged and convicted. However, his arrest and subsequent fine are often erroneously attributed to speeding, making him the "first person to be convicted of exceeding the speed limit in Britain." This distinction actually belongs to Walter Arnold, who was convicted in January 1896.

Impact on Automotive Law

Despite the legal challenges, Knight's "Trusty" played a significant role in shaping automotive laws. Its arrest spurred the repeal of the infamous "Red Flag Act," which required self-propelled vehicles to have a man walking in front with a red flag.

Later Inventions and Life

After the "Trusty," Knight continued his work as an inventor. He developed various steam-powered machines for agricultural and other purposes. He also invented the energy-efficient "Thermosote" radiator and a brick-laying machine used in the construction of Barfield School in Runfold.

Knight was also an avid photographer and contributed to the early development of color photography. He passed away in Farnham on September 22, 1917, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and the recognition as a pioneer in the automotive and engineering fields.
