Biography of John Henry Martin

John Henry Martin was a German-American entrepreneur and manufacturer of musical instruments. He was the founder of the legendary company 'Martin Band Instrument Company', which specialized in the production of wind instruments. His influence on the development of jazz music is considered immense, and his contribution to the overall advancement of music cannot be underestimated. Despite never appearing on newspaper covers during his lifetime, most jazz musicians around the world played and continue to play instruments manufactured by his company.

Early Life

John Henry Martin was born on February 24, 1835, in Dresden, Germany. As a teenager, he became an apprentice in a workshop that produced wind instruments. When he turned twenty, John decided to move to the United States and seek his fortune on the new continent. He spent several years in New York City before eventually relocating to Chicago, where he founded his first company for manufacturing musical instruments. It is believed that his company became the first producer of wind instruments in the district.

The Fire and New Beginnings

In 1871, a fire in Chicago completely destroyed Martin's business, leaving him and his seven sons homeless. By chance, they learned about the opening of a new factory owned by the 'C.G. Conn' company in Elkhart, Indiana, which has since become the capital of brass wind instruments. John spent the rest of his life working at the factory, dedicating his free time to sketching and developing his own instruments. These instruments were only introduced a few years before his death. In 1902, John's health declined, and he became less active in his work.

Legacy and Revival

John's eldest son, Henry Charles Martin, along with his brothers, decided to revive their father's company. In 1905, the 'Martin Band Instrument Company' was founded in Elkhart. However, due to conflicts within the family, the company only produced selected models of musical instruments during the first five years and did not operate at full capacity. Despite the quality of their products, the family business was not entirely successful. In 1912, a majority of the company's shares were sold, but the Martin family continued to manage the business.

In the late 1930s, the company introduced the 'Martin Committee' trumpet, which quickly became one of the most popular musical instruments in the jazz world. Musicians were drawn to its warm sound and remarkable flexibility. Legendary artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, and Art Farmer were among those who played the 'Martin Committee'. Today, there are only a few original models from the 1930s and 1940s remaining, with later models averaging around $3,000 and early models being valued at around $10,000.

In 1971, the Martin company was acquired by 'Leblanc', an American manufacturer of musical instruments. However, the company retained its original name and resumed the production of the legendary trumpet, although it did not match the excellence of the original model.
