Prince of Salerno and the Founding of a Dynasty

John II, also known as John the Cursed, ruled as Prince of Salerno from 983 to 994. He established a dynasty that governed the principality until its fall in 1078.

Early Life and Struggle for Power

Born to Lambert of Spoleto, John II was appointed regent by Prince Pandulf I for his underage son, Pandulf II of Salerno, in 981. However, he was subsequently expelled from Salerno by Duke Manso I of Amalfi, who seized power. In 983, a rebellion ousted both Manso I and John I, paving the way for John II to ascend to the throne.

Controversial Reign

During his reign, John II attempted to control the wealth and property of the Church, earning him his infamous moniker. Legend recounted by Peter Damian claims that upon witnessing an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, John II predicted the death of a great sinner, only to be found dead in bed with a prostitute the following morning.

Co-Rulers and Succession

In January 984, John II appointed his son Guido as co-ruler, but Guido passed away in 988. In early 989, his second son, Guaimar III, became his co-ruler and eventually succeeded him as Prince of Salerno in 994.
