John Michael Stipe, the leader and founder of the American rock band R.E.M., was born in 1960 in the state of Georgia, USA. Throughout his childhood, Stipe traveled with his family as his father, a helicopter pilot, was constantly transferred due to his military service. This led Stipe to live in Germany, Alabama, Texas, Illinois, and Georgia. Due to the constant moving, Stipe grew up introverted and did not seek company. In his teenage years, he developed a strong interest in punk music, which was popular and trendy at the time. Alongside his passion for music, Stipe also had an interest in photography and visual arts.

As a student at The University of Georgia, Stipe spent a lot of time in a music store. It was there that he met Peter Buck, a junior clerk, with whom he shared common interests and musical preferences. The two became friends and soon started experimenting with music together, leading to the formation of the legendary rock band R.E.M. In the early years, the band performed underground concerts, and in 1982, they released their first mini-album, "Chronic Town." In April 1983, R.E.M. released their first full-length album, "Murmur." Over the years, the band released 14 albums and became a cult favorite among a large fanbase.

Stipe was responsible for the lyrics in the band, and his songwriting often hinted at themes of homosexuality. However, he only publicly acknowledged his sexual orientation in 1998. Throughout the band's existence, there were debates and speculation about Stipe's sexuality, but he remained private about it until he confirmed he was gay in May 2001. He collaborated with the fashion house Maison Martin Margiela to create a silver cassette tape accessory, limited to 199 pieces, each signed by Stipe himself. In 2007, he participated in a year-long, non-stop photo experiment in real-time. As of 2005, Stipe has been actively involved in sculpting, and his first solo exhibition, "Rogan versus Stipe," was held in the summer of 2008 at the Rogan boutique in New York City.

Today, Stipe is approaching his fifties but claims to not feel like he has changed much. He still considers himself shy and reflects on his younger self, stating, "At 19, I had bad skin, terrible haircuts, problems with my sexuality, and I was pathologically shy. Despite my skin not improving much, I am still quite introverted." In terms of music, R.E.M.'s last album, "Accelerate," was released in March 2008.
