Biography of John Evans Atta Mills

John Evans Atta Mills was a Ghanaian scholar and politician who served as the second Vice President and third President of the Republic of Ghana. He was born on July 21, 1944, in Tarkwa, a city in the western region of Ghana.

Education and Academic Career

After completing his secondary education at Achimota School in 1963, Mills enrolled at the University of Ghana in Legon. In 1967, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree. Mills then pursued further studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, a division of the University of London. He was among the few African students selected to study at Stanford Law School in the United States, where he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. Mills returned to London and two years later earned another doctorate degree in "Tax and Economic Development".

From 1974, Mills taught at the University of Ghana's Faculty of Law for twenty-five years. During this time, he conducted research and published extensively on economics and taxation. Mills also delivered lectures at various universities, participated in international symposiums and conferences around the world. He served on the Council of the Ghana Stock Exchange, the Board of Trustees of Miners, and the Administrative Committee of the United Nations Taxation Workers' Association. He also contributed to the editorial board of a Ghanaian taxation journal.

Political Career

In 1988, Mills was appointed as a Special Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority. Five years after the adoption of a new constitution in Ghana, Mills, a member of the National Democratic Congress party, was elected as Vice President of the Republic through a popular vote. He was re-elected to the position in 2002 and received the party's mandate to participate in the presidential elections in 2004, although he did not win. However, in 2008, Mills ran again and emerged victorious.

Presidency and Personal Life

John Evans Atta Mills took the presidential oath on January 7, 2009, becoming the third President of the Republic of Ghana. He was married to Naadu Mills and had a nineteen-year-old son from a previous marriage. Mills, who was a member of the Ghana national field hockey team, continued to play in a veterans' hockey team and actively supported the Ghana Hockey Federation.
