Early Life and Family
John of Woodstock, the 3rd Baron Woodstock and Earl of Kent, was born posthumously after the death of his father, Edmund of Woodstock. His father was the half-brother of King Edward II and was executed for treason in 1330.
Inheritance and Titles
After the execution of his father, John and his family were imprisoned but were released in 1330. John inherited the titles of Earl of Kent and Baron Woodstock after the deaths of his older brothers. In 1349, he inherited the title of Baron Wake of Liddell from his mother.
Reign and Controversies
John came of age in 1351 and was formally inducted into his titles. However, controversy soon followed. John was accused of plotting against King Edward III and was imprisoned. He was later released but remained under suspicion.
Marriage and Legacy
In 1348, John married Elizabeth of Jülich, daughter of Count William V of Jülich and Joan of Hainaut. They had no children. John died in 1352, leaving no heirs. His sister, Joan, inherited all his titles.
