American Entrepreneur and Manager
John Riccitiello is an American entrepreneur and manager who served as the CEO of Electronic Arts from 2007 to 2013. He received his education at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining Electronic Arts, Riccitiello worked for consumer goods companies such as The Clorox Company, PepsiCo, Häagen-Dazs International, Wilson Sporting Goods, and Sara Lee Corporation.
Leadership at Electronic Arts
In October 1997, Riccitiello took on the role of President and Chief Operating Officer at Electronic Arts. After leaving EA, he founded a company called Elevation Partners. However, in 2007, he was rehired by Electronic Arts as the CEO. It is credited to Riccitiello for introducing a new entrepreneurial model at Electronic Arts, shifting the company from traditional product sales to digital delivery.
Transformation of the Company
Shortly after becoming CEO, Riccitiello addressed the company's challenges and proposed necessary transformations. He believed that the company was in a critical position and that significant changes were essential. Under his leadership, the company shifted its focus to digital distribution, which was gaining prominence in the gaming industry. In August 2011, Riccitiello highlighted the success of these transformations in his blog, stating that the company had not only emerged from a difficult period but also regained its position as a market leader.
Criticism and Departure
Despite Riccitiello's optimism, the effectiveness of the reforms was questioned by both industry critics and consumers. Electronic Arts faced criticism and its stock prices declined significantly. This led to doubts about Riccitiello's competence as a CEO. In March 2013, it was announced that he would be stepping down from his position. However, the Executive Chairman of the company, Larry Probst, acknowledged Riccitiello's bold decisions, long-term vision, commitment to quality, and respect for employees during his tenure.
Current Status and Successor
Since Riccitiello's departure, Larry Probst has temporarily taken on the vacant CEO position. The search for a successor to John Riccitiello is currently underway and is being conducted actively.
