Early Life and EducationJohn Richard Green was born on December 12, 1837, in Oxford, England, to a tradesman father. He received his education in his hometown before embarking on a path to become a clergyman.
Transition to Historical Research
Despite his ordination, Green's true passion lay in historical research. In 1869, health issues forced him to resign from his clerical duties, leading him to accept a position as a librarian in Lambeth, London.

While initially planning to write several comprehensive historical works, Green's pulmonary illness compelled him to shift his focus. The result was his masterpiece, "A Short History of the English People," published in 1874. This highly acclaimed work solidified Green's status as one of the most influential historians of his time.
Marriage and Collaboration
In 1877, Green married Alice Stopford, who became his invaluable collaborator. Together, they embarked on expanding his earlier work and producing the four-volume "History of the English People," published in 1880.
Later Years and Legacy
Green died on March 7, 1883, in Menton, France, at the age of 45.
