Early Life and Travel

John Robert Cozens, born in 1752, was a prominent English landscape painter of the Romantic era. His artistic journey began early as he traveled to Switzerland and Italy from 1776 to 1779.

Italy and Patronage

In 1782-1783, Cozens embarked on another trip to Italy, this time accompanied by William Beckford, a student of his father, Alexander Cozens. During this period, Cozens' talent and vision flourished under the influence of the picturesque Italian landscapes.

Mental Illness

In 1793, Cozens suffered a devastating mental breakdown that drastically altered his life. From then on, he lived under medical supervision until his passing in 1797.

Artistic Legacy

Despite his personal struggles, Cozens' influential paintings left an indelible mark on the development of English landscape art. His works inspired subsequent generations of painters, most notably Thomas Girtin and William Turner.
