Biography of John Glover

John Glover, a European artist, was a talented painter who created remarkable landscapes of Australia. He became a unique artistic pioneer, shedding light on this mysterious and distant country. John Glover is called the 'father' of Australian landscape painting and one of the most popular artists of the 19th century. In the last years of his life, Glover lived in Tasmania, near Launceston. The prestigious 'Glover Prize' is now awarded annually here.

Early Life and Success

John Glover was born in the village of Houghton-on-the-Hill in Leicestershire, England, on February 18, 1767. This time was ideal for the flourishing of art and visual arts. It is not surprising that Glover became very successful and popular. He achieved success and fulfilled himself as an artist, successful public figure, and, of course, all of this brought him good money. He was considered a genius in his homeland, but despite the all-around success of his paintings, Glover decided to move to Tasmania, which had long enticed him with its mystery and unexplored nature. It was here that he found inspiration, was able to show new facets of his creativity, and painted and showcased the country as no one had seen it before.

Artistic Career and Travels

John Glover was known for his cheerful nature. He was sociable, eccentric, and energetic with excellent self-control. Glover also loved to travel. His early works were watercolor landscapes. His first exhibition took place at the Royal Academy in 1795 and was a huge success among visitors, leading to an offer for John to hold annual exhibitions of his paintings. Glover also embarked on a trip through Europe, and his paintings received praise from even the most discerning critics. All of this led to John opening his own gallery in London in 1820.

Australian Landscapes and Legacy

However, it was the Australian landscapes that elevated the artist to a pedestal and earned him society's recognition. After three of Glover's sons moved to Tasmania, the artist and his wife decided to relocate to this country. Here, he found wide prospects and numerous opportunities for new works. He sent his works to London, where they enjoyed immense success. The residents of foggy Albion were captivated by the landscapes of the distant country and sought to acquire Glover's paintings. His final work was completed at the age of 79. John Glover passed away at the age of 82 in 1849. To this day, John Glover's paintings adorn leading world galleries, with many works in private collections.
