John Vanbiesbrouck was born on July 4, 1963, in Detroit, Michigan. His professional hockey career began in 1981 when he was selected in the fourth round (72nd overall) by the New York Rangers.

Vanbiesbrouck made his NHL debut in 1981 and quickly established himself as a top goaltender. He played for five different teams over the course of his career, including the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, Panthers, and Devils.
