Childhood and Early Career

Roman Lyashenko was born in Murmansk, Russia, and began his hockey career with Torpedo Yaroslavl. He played as a centerman and made a significant impact on the team, helping them to win the Russian Championship in 1997 and bronze medals in 1998 and 1999. In total, he played 130 games for Torpedo, scoring 22 goals and 22 assists.

International Success

Lyashenko also represented Russia internationally, playing for the under-20 team. He won the silver medal at the 1998 World Junior Championships and captained the team to a gold medal in 1999.

NHL Career

In 1999, Lyashenko began his NHL career with the Dallas Stars. He was part of the team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2000. In March 2002, he was traded to the New York Rangers along with Martin Rucinsky, where he finished out the season. The following year, he played only two games for the Rangers and spent most of his time with their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. In total, Lyashenko recorded 23 points (14 goals and 9 assists) in 138 NHL games.

Return to Russia and International Competition

After his NHL career, there were rumors that Lyashenko was in talks with Russian teams such as Lada Togliatti and Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. However, before any agreement could be reached, tragedy struck.

Tragic Death and Legacy

On July 7, 2003, Lyashenko was found dead in a hotel room in Antalya, Turkey, where he was vacationing with his mother and sister. The circumstances surrounding his death were initially unclear, but it was eventually ruled a suicide. A suicide note was found, in which Lyashenko allegedly asked for forgiveness and mentioned an incurable illness. However, no evidence of illness was found during his autopsy. His family contested the suicide ruling.

Lyashenko was buried in Leontievskoye Cemetery in Yaroslavl. His death left a lasting impact on the hockey world, and he is remembered as a talented player and a well-respected individual.
