Biography of Sergio Tacchini

Sergio Tacchini, an Italian sportswear designer, was born in Novara, Italy, on May 30, 1938. At the age of 17, he became a professional tennis player and was accepted into the Milan Tennis Club in 1955. In 1960, Tacchini won the title of Italian Champion after defeating his compatriot, Nicola Pietrangeli. He also competed in the Davis Cup, winning five singles matches and one doubles match out of 15 tennis matches. Tacchini achieved two more doubles titles in Italy alongside Pietrangeli in 1967 and 1968.

Founding of 'Sandys S.p.A.'

In 1966, Sergio Tacchini founded the company 'Sandys S.p.A.', which was later renamed in his honor. The initial idea of the company was to experiment with bright clothing and fabrics to create elegant and stylish apparel for tennis players, aiming to break away from the dominant white attire. Over time, the 'Sandys S.p.A.' project evolved to include other sports such as skiing, fitness, golf, sailing, and leisurewear.

The 'Dallas' Sportswear Suit

In the mid-1980s, Sergio Tacchini introduced the renowned sports suit 'Dallas' under the brand 'Sergio Tacchini'. Many athletes collaborated with the Tacchini brand for years, including famous tennis players of the 1970s and 1980s such as Jimmy Connors, Vitas Gerulaitis, Ilie Năstase, and Mats Wilander. The list of tennis celebrities supported by Tacchini continues with John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Pat Cash, Gabriela Sabatini, Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanišević, and Novak Djokovic.

Sponsorship and Support

Tacchini's company also sponsored the Italian basketball team in the European Champions Cup in 1983, as well as skiers Pirmin Zurbriggen and Marc Girardelli. They also supported Formula 1 drivers, including Ayrton Senna and Carlos Reutemann. In addition, Sergio Tacchini provided financial support to golfer Ian Woosnam. Currently, the 'Sergio Tacchini' brand continues to sponsor athletes like skipper Karine Fauconnier and English cricketer Ian Bell.
