Early Life and Career
John Viitanen, a Finnish musician and bass guitarist, was born in Finland. In 1984, he co-founded the heavy metal band Black Water with Tuomo Lassila and Staffan Stråhlman. There is some discrepancy over the band's original name, with some sources claiming it was always Stratovarius.
Black Water and Beyond
At the end of 1984, with the addition of new lead composer Timo Tolkki, Viitanen left Black Water (or Stratovarius) due to musical differences. He was replaced by Jari Kainulainen. Viitanen subsequently joined bands such as Five Fifteen and Monsterbore, among others.
Current Projects
In recent years, John Viitanen has been a member of the Finnish blues-rock band Ben Granfelt Band.
