Early Life and Education

John William Ashe was born into a humble family in Antigua and Barbuda. Despite his parents' lack of formal education, Ashe excelled academically. He earned degrees from Saint Mary's University (Canada), the Technical University of Nova Scotia, and the University of Pennsylvania (PhD in bioengineering).

Diplomatic Career at the United Nations

In 1989, Ashe joined the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations as a Science Attaché. He rose through the ranks, serving as Deputy Permanent Representative (1995-2004) and Permanent Representative (2004-2012).

Leadership in Environmental Negotiations

Ashe played a pivotal role in global environmental negotiations. He chaired the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol and led the Subsidiary Body for Implementation and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol. He also guided the development of Chapter X of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and co-chaired the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20").

High-Level UN Positions

Ashe served on the Executive Boards of the UNDP/UNFPA and UNICEF. In 2008, he became Chair of the New York Group of 77 and China, the largest coalition of developing countries in the United Nations. He also chaired the General Assembly's High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation.

Presidency of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly

In 2013, Ashe was elected President of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly. His tenure was marked by his focus on sustainable development, climate change, and global health.

Corruption Allegations and Death

In 2015, Ashe was arrested in the United States on bribery and tax evasion charges. He was accused of receiving bribes related to real estate deals in the Caribbean and China. He was released on $1 million bail and died in 2016 from injuries sustained during a weightlifting accident.
