Biography of John William Rayleigh
John William Rayleigh (1842–1919) was an English physicist known for his extensive contributions to various fields of science. He was born on November 12, 1842, in Langford Grove, Essex. Rayleigh received his education at home and later attended Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he worked until 1871.
Research and Achievements
In 1873, Rayleigh established a laboratory at his family estate, Terling Place. He is the author of the influential work "The Theory of Sound" published between 1877 and 1878. In 1879, he became a professor of experimental physics at the University of Cambridge and, in 1884, the secretary of the Royal Society of London.
Rayleigh's research interests spanned a wide range of subjects, including the theory of vibrations (becoming one of its pioneers), acoustics, thermal radiation, molecular physics, electromagnetism, and optics. His investigations into elastic vibrations led to the discovery of several properties of oscillatory systems, notably his observation of self-oscillations. He also studied surface waves and, in 1885, predicted the existence of a special type of wave known as "Rayleigh waves." Rayleigh established the relationship between phase and group velocities.
One of Rayleigh's major contributions was in the field of molecular scattering of light. In 1871, he formulated the law stating that the intensity of light scattered by a medium is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelength (Rayleigh scattering). He also explained the reason for the blue color of the sky based on scattering phenomena. Rayleigh designed numerous instruments and devices, including a refractometer, differential manometer, and sound level meter.
In collaboration with William Ramsay, Rayleigh discovered a new chemical element, argon, in 1894. They determined its properties and established its place in the periodic table of elements. For this achievement, Rayleigh received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1900, Rayleigh formulated the distribution of energy in the spectrum of a perfectly black body as a function of temperature, known as Rayleigh-Jeans law. He was honored with various medals, including the Rumford, Copley, and Faraday medals.
John William Rayleigh passed away on June 30, 1919, in Terling Place, Essex. His diverse scientific contributions and groundbreaking discoveries have left a lasting impact on the fields of physics and acoustics.
