John Briceño: A Journey from Business to Belize's Top Office
Early Life and EducationJohn Briceño was born on July 17, 1960, in Orange Walk Town, British Honduras (now Belize). His father, Elidio Joe Briceño, served as Chairman of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers' Association and later as Minister of Energy and Communications.
Briceño completed his junior college education in Orange Walk in 1978. He went on to earn an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from St. John's College in 1980 and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985.
Business Career
In 1990, Briceño co-founded Centaur Communications with his brother Jaime. The company provided cable television, internet, television news, and radio services.
Political Career
Early YearsBriceño entered politics in 1993 when he was elected to the House of Representatives of Belize for the Orange Walk Central constituency. He also successfully ran for Mayor of Orange Walk Town in 1994.
Aufstieg in the People's United Party (PUP)
Briceño became Co-Chairman of the PUP in 1994 and Deputy Leader in 1996. Following the PUP's victory in the 1998 election, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment.
In 2004, Briceño led a group of ministers known as the G-7 Alliance that demanded reforms, including the dismissal of Ralph Fonseca from the cabinet. When Prime Minister Said Musa refused, the group resigned. However, Musa later agreed to all demands except Fonseca's dismissal, and the G-7 ministers remained in the cabinet. Briceño also received the additional portfolio of Minister of Finance.
Resignation from Government
Briceño was one of the ministers who opposed Musa's proposal to pay off the country's universal healthcare debt. As a result, Musa attempted to demote Briceño from the position of Deputy Prime Minister. However, Briceño refused to accept the lesser positions offered to him and resigned on June 5, 2007.
Leadership of the PUP
In July 2007, Briceño was re-elected as a Vice-Leader of the PUP. After the party's defeat in the February 2008 general election, Briceño was re-elected in his Orange Walk Central constituency. He became Leader of the PUP on March 30, 2008, defeating Francis Fonseca, who was considered the preferred candidate of the party establishment.
Hiatus and Return to Leadership
Citing undisclosed health issues, Briceño abruptly resigned as Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition in October 2011. He did not lead the party in the general election. He retained his seat in the National Assembly, and Francis Fonseca succeeded him in both leadership roles.
Prime Minister of Belize
On November 11, 2020, the PUP led by Briceño won the general election in a decisive victory over the United Democratic Party led by Patrick Faber. Briceño was sworn in as Prime Minister of Belize on November 12, 2020, becoming the first Prime Minister not from Belize City.
