Early Life and Career
Johnny Nash, the American reggae and pop singer, was born as John Lester Nash Jr. in Houston, Texas. He began his career as a pop singer in the 1950s, releasing four albums for ABC-Paramount, starting with his eponymous debut in 1958.
Acting and Label Founding
In addition to his music career, Nash also pursued acting, appearing in the 1959 film adaptation of Louis S. Peterson's "Take a Giant Step." He received a Silver Sail award at the Locarno International Film Festival for his performance. In 1965, Nash co-founded the record label Joda Records in New York, which signed a contract with The Cowsills, a boy band from Rhode Island.
Jamaican Encounters
In 1968, Nash traveled to Jamaica, where he met and worked with Bob Marley and The Wailers. He signed an exclusive recording contract with his JAD label and an exclusive publishing deal with Cayman music. Nash released two singles with Marley and Tosh, but none of their songs gained commercial success.
Breakthrough with "I Can See Clearly Now"
Nash's breakthrough came in 1972 with the release of "I Can See Clearly Now," which sold over a million copies and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song, which was also recorded in London, featured original compositions by Marley, including "Guava Jelly," "Comma Comma," "You Poured Sugar On Me," and "Stir It Up."
Writing and Film Soundtrack
Nash's diverse career extended to songwriting for the Swedish film "Vill så gårna tro" (1971), in which he also played the lead role. The film's soundtrack, which included reggae and string arrangements, was composed by Bob Marley and arranged by Fred Jordan.
Legacy and Later Years
The JAD label was revived in 1997 for the release of a series of Bob Marley and The Wailers albums, containing remastered and remixed tracks by Marley and Tosh. Nash's greatest hits include "Hold Me Tight" and "Stir It Up," written by Marley before his international success. In the UK, his biggest hit was "Tears on My Pillow," which topped the charts in 1975. Johnny Nash passed away in October 2020, leaving a lasting impact on the world of reggae and pop music.
